Monday, Oct. 22

CFS founder to offer ways to combat workplace stress

​Francoise Mathieu, Compassion Fatigue Solutions founder and co-executive director of TEND, will give a series of Everyday Wellness presentations, "Strategies for Surviving Workplace Stress," on Monday, Oct. 22, in room CW106 of the Classroom Wing.

Mathiew will discuss "Becoming Trauma Informed, the Basics," from 1-2:30 p.m., and "Grounding Skills for Managing Exposure," from 3-4:30 p.m.

Schwartz Rounds to tackle ethical decision making

Doris Whitaker, pastoral services director, will facilitate the Schwartz Center Rounds discussion, "Ethical Decision Making: How a Chaplain Can Be the Mediator Between the Patient and the Interdisciplinary Team, a Case Study," from noon-1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

APA science director to advocate for nonhuman research

Dr. Sangeeta Panicker, science director in the Office of Research Ethics at the American Psychological Association, Washington, D.C., will give the Neurobiology and Anatomical Sciences Seminar Series presentation, "Advocating for Nonhuman Animal Research: Why Bother?" from noon-1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, in classroom 3A (room N318 on the North Wing).

Collegiate scholars set to heat up RICE competition

Top scholars from Mississippi colleges and universities will join Medical Center students in the annual Rural Interdisciplinary Case Experience (RICE) Bowl, an interactive health-care competition with audience participation, at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, in the UMMC Conference Center at the Jackson Medical Mall Thad Cochran Center.

Sponsored by the Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities, the RICE Bowl is an academic competition in which team members answer questions and solve a complex health-care case. Attendees will have the opportunity to sound off during the event as well.

Johns Hopkins faculty to talk physiology hypoxia factors

Dr. Gregg Semenza, C. Michael Armstrong Professor of Pediatric Genetic Medicine at Johns Hopkins Children's Center and founding director of the vascular program at the Institute for Cell Engineering, Baltimore, Maryland, will give the Department of Physiology's Physiologists in Training Distinguished Lecture, "Hypoxia-inducible Factors in Physiology and Medicine," from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

Awards ceremony to honor exceptional researchers

The Excellence in Research Awards ceremony to honor UMMC faculty and staff who have distinguished themselves with exceptional research is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24, in the student union. A reception will take place after the ceremony.

HSTA founder to offer ADDS talk on rural STEM outreach

Dr. Ann Chester, founder and director of the Health Sciences and Technology Academy, will present the Academic Development and Discovery Seminar, "A Rural STEM Outreach Model from West Virginia: Achieving Health Care Workforce Diversity," from noon-1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25, in room 122 of the medical education building.

Grad Studies to host annual Research Day event

​The School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences will host its Research Day 2018 event on Friday, Oct. 26, in the student union.

Oral presentations by postdoctoral fellows and instructors are scheduled from 9-10 a.m. in the second-floor conference center. Poster presentations by postdoctoral fellows, instructors and graduate students will be displayed from 10:15 a.m.-noon in the gymnasium.

Cedars-Sinai surgeon to explore transgender anatomy

Dr. Maurice Garcia, a surgeon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, will give a WebEx presentation sponsored by the Associated Student Body, "Transgender Anatomy: Changing Anatomy in a Changing World," at noon on Friday, Oct. 26, in rooms SM-122 and SM-124 of the medical education building.

Colorado atherosclerosis expert to sound off on lipoprotein lipase

Dr. Robert H. Eckel, Charles A. Boettcher Endowed Chair in Atherosclerosis; professor of medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes; and interim vice chancellor for research at the Anschutz Medical Center, University of Colorado, Denver, at Aurora, will give the Grand Rounds presentation, “Lipoprotein Lipase: An Evolving Story on How Tissue Specific Regulation of the Enzyme Relates to Metabolism and Beyond,” at noon on Thursday, Nov. 8 in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

The presentation is sponsored by the Mississippi Center for Obesity Research, the Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research and the Cardiorenal and Metabolic Diseases Research Center.
